re-discovering miss joni

Joni Mitchell
i've recently re-discovered the music and art of joni mitchell--musician, songwriter and painter. she gained popularity during the 70's (did i tell you i love music from that era?). too often, she's dubbed as the "female" bob dylan (another interesting musician), but she refuses the title. i love her husky voice, folksy instrumentals and great, great lyrics. here's a song i've been playing over and over the past few days. several versions of this song are out there, including one by sharon cuneta. but the original is still the best.
rows and floes of angel hair
and ice cream castles in the air
and feather canyons evrywhere
i've looked at clouds that way
but now they only block the sun
they rain and snow on evryone
so many things i would have done
but clouds got in my way
i've looked at clouds from both sides now
from up and down, and still somehow
it's cloud illusions i recall
i really dont know clouds at all
moons and junes and ferris wheels
the dizzy dancing way you feel
as evry fairy tale comes real
i've looked at love that way
but now its just another show
you leave em laughing when you go
and if you care, dont let them know
don't give yourself away
i've looked at love from both sides now
from give and take, and still somehow
it's loves illusions i recall
i really dont know love at all
tears and fears and feeling proud
to say i love you right out loud
dreams and schemes and circus crowds
i've looked at life that way
but now old friends are acting strange
they shake their heads, they say i've changed
well some things lost, but some things gained
in living evry day
i've looked at life from both sides now
from win and lose and still somehow
it's life's illusions i recall
i really dont know life at all
i've looked at life from both sides now
from up and down, and still somehow
it's lifes illusions i recall
i really dont know life at all
-both sides now, clouds (1967)

alternative job: tour guide

ok, here's the most i could squeeze here, with my tight schedule over the weekend and the next couple of days. my lovely cousins are visiting, and i'm the tour guide. when i first visited singapore, someone had checked streetdirectory and printed out for me detailed directions from my hotel to my training office. and of course, i had my expat friends (now, co-expats) take me around. a year later, i'm the one showing people around and giving directions (eg. which bus to take, where to get down, etc) .
first stop: sentosa! lots of people, lots of pictures (of course) and lots of walking. spent the whole afternoon over there and i got to rediscover it's sites again. come to think of it, i've never gone in to the insect and butterfly garden, watch the dolphin show and climb up to the top of the merlion. so we had a great time.
oh, and another thing, it's really, really christmas! you guys should check out mt.faber. they have snow! ok, fake snow, but still you get a feel of the season. and guess what, i kissed santa! ok, fake santa, but still, jolly guy in red suit, with white beard saying "ho-ho-ho". cute! and no, there was no contact, i just blew him a kiss.
i'll post some pictures later. blogger is getting too slow these days (or maybe it's just my pc).

happy birthday, singapore!

singapore flag
today's a holiday. we get to spend a few more hours in bed. hay salamat. the reason: its singapore's 41st birthday. yey!

they've got this whole celebration thing going, with fireworks, and a parade. ang saya, di ba. so as a birthday gift to singapore, let me list down things i like about living here:

1) the bus and mrt system: its true what people say: you can get to any point in singapore within 30 minutes. totoo yan. well, except if you're like going from choa chu kang to expo using the mrt, but this theory almost always proves true. the buses and trains run like clockwork, you just have to know the schedule. and let me tell you that the bus drivers are really disciplined. they literally stop at the bus stop, nowhere else.

2) the library: i love the fact that its so convenient to borrow books (i can reserve online. cool), and they have a really extensive collection, and so modern: i just use my card and check out my books, parang sa grocery. no more messy stamps from the librarian.

3) food: i get a wide range of affordable and yummy food. everywhere i turn, there's a hawker's center.

4) ECP (east coast park): because i can ride my bike going to the park, without worrying i'll get hit by a speeding car, and you'll really feel healthy when you ride along with other park visitors.

5) shopping: its not just orchard road. there are a lot of small areas where you find really good buys (read: cheap and of good quality).

6) trees: trees everywhere, even in the highways, there are always plants around. good for the health, good for the environment.

ok, so there's my birthday gift, singapore. happy birthday!
